“Learning from Alinta” is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educational resource designed to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people following a tragedy or trauma in the community. The DVD is based on the story of people healing from a tragic event, and through this we share the Learnings from Alinta’s story.
Our story begins with a workshop and this may be uncomfortable for viewers as it displays the heart wrenching journey of a group of people who were directly affected by the death of Alinta, a young person who ended her life. As the story unfolds, Learning from Alinta shares footage of how people have journeyed through pain to find something hopeful, that there is a path and a journey out of being surrounded by pain, hurt, anger and injustice.
Learning from Alinta may bring up emotions related to an event or number of events which have happened in your community. Alinta’s family want to share this story to show families and communities that tragedies like Alinta’s story can bring people together to heal.
Learning from Alinta is about how an Aboriginal community is finding our way through this tragic event both individually and together, walking between the worlds of combining Aboriginal “Sorry Business” with meeting our needs in accordance with Westernised ways.
Our sincerest gratitude to Alinta’s family and friends who mustered the courage to publically share their journey through the grief and sorrow of Sorry Business.
Alinta’s family hope that sharing this story may assist other families and young people, and provide solace and strength those who may be affected by a traumatic event.
